LogseqTimes 2023-11-18: Logseq Long Form Writing, Performance, Project Management, Getting Started Video, Queries, Updated Plugins and much more
The latest Logseq news, updates and thoughts during the past week. LogseqTimes 2023-11-18: Logseq Long Form Writing, Performance, Project Management, Getting Started Video, Queries, Updated Plugins and much more

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to a new edition of Logseq Times. In the past week, we have had quite a few events, such as the Las Vegas F1 testing being stopped early due to the wrong type of manhole covers, AI looking like it will take over all aspects of our lives (although how knows what will happen to PenAI now that Sam Altman has been ousted), the Icelandic volcano and climate change. Still, at least we have the last season of The Crown to look forward to.
What we also have to look forward to is another week of eventful news in the Logseq World.
Logseq Release
No new release this week. You can download the latest desktop and Android app from here.
Lost a member of the Logseq Team?
In my Sherlock Holmes or Byomkesh Bakshi, for my India-based (or fans of Big Bang) friends, investigation, it seems that a member of the Logseq team has moved on to new pastures. Good luck with the new adventure!
I am sure there will be a more official announcement in due course, so I have kept details to a minimum as it is more water-cooler talk on my part.
Long Form in Logseq
@Luhmann kindly contacted me and let me know that Seth Yuan had created a long-form plugin to enable us to see our notes differently and give it the feeling of prose as opposed to an outline.
The plugin can be found here, so if you want to transform your notes into prose, be sure to check it out. It is a paid plugin, but in my opinion, well worth it.
If you have any other useful comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Logseq Performance
OP asks an interesting question: "Is logseq performance really terrible when you get a notebook up to 1000+ pages or are there just loud complainers with very crappy laptops?"
Some of the responses include:
- Yes, performance degrades as your KB grows
- Can't wait for the database mode to be released
- No, no issues from my side.
- Today I had a really bad day with Logseq... (does sound like poor OP had a bit of a nightmare)
- I haven't had any issues with corruption or performance.
Seems to be a mixed bag of responses so it's worth checking the post in more detail.
Recipe Manager in Logseq?
OP asked if anyone was storing recipes in Logseq - the responses received were few and far between, so I wanted to put the question out there for anyone reading this newsletter.
If you store your recipes in Logeq, please do share any screenshots / workflows that you have, as it would be interesting to learn how different people manage this sort of information - which can then be extrapolated out from just recipes.
Happy to receive any comments on here, or please do share in the Discord / Forum.
Setting to Limit Query Table Block Width to XX number of Characters
Not satisfied with how Logseq presents the table view in a similar manner as described by Florian:
In Table View, the first column (Block) shows the whole Block Title and, for Blocks where the Title is also the Body of the Block (there is no Soft-Break where the bulk ok the Block is in separate paragraphs) the Query Results Table is so wide you have to use the scrollbar a lot of distance to see other properties.
I would find it more useful if Logseq would allow the option to limit columns to a maximum number of characters, either a single number somewhere in config.edn or even on a per-property basis in the same overlay pop-up where you can toggle on and off the visibility of the properties in the table (from the settings properties cog of the results table).
Well, you can use the following in custom.css
file to hopefully tweak it to your liking.
.custom-query-results td.whitespace-nowrap div {
display: inline-block;
overflow: hidden;
text-overflow: ellipsis;
max-width: 16ch;
}
Getting Started with Logseq?
MK recently posted a video on "How to Use Logseq to Take Amazing Notes". Well worth a watch if you are starting out with Logseq or want to learn more about the features.
Knowing and Enforcing Policy Within Your PKM
I really liked this post by OP who asked the question / made the point of:
I imagine that everyone has a set of soft rules that they like to abide by, that may be incomplete and also contradicting - I’ll call this weak policy. It’s fine if the policy is broken as you create content or as you specify policy, but you as a user may wish to know about it, so that it’s done intentionally. I don’t think the contradiction and incompleteness (weakness) is an issue as there’s probably have some contradiction within our mental models. So I’d like to look at how others might answer the question,
How might we express policies and verify where they are and aren’t holding?
The post gives a few worked examples and looks at exploring how users manage their PKM knowledge base given the constant bombardment
Logseq DB Version
After a little bit of digging, the database model will be based on SQLite with integration via WASM (rusqlite/rusqlite#1010 and wa-sqlite's sahpool). This is all a bit gobbledygook to me, but work has been going on in earnest with regular commits being made.
Summarising books with ChatGPT, Python and Logseq
It seems that Martin Brochhaus of The Artling did a talk on using Logseq, together with ChatGPT and Python to summarise books.
The talk looked at:
- How to create a Python program from scratch
- How to take screenshots with Python
- How to use an OCR library to read text in images
- How to write text to files with Python
- How to use the OpenAI API to use ChatGPT to create summaries for a given text
- Use Logseq to take notes
All very useful stuff.
The event was unfortunately only open to members of the National Library Board, Singapore, so if anyone has contact with either Martin or the National Library Board, Singapore, please do let me know, as I would love to obtain a copy of the seminar.
Multi-Devices Logseq Sync Setup
OP recently completely moved their personal knowledge management from Obsidian to Logseq.
"To support my way of continuous digital note-taking and knowledge gathering, reducing friction to take notes is a must. Therefore, having the app ready on every device I use is essential and it poses a new requirement, the content must always be in sync across all those devices.
Problem: “I need my Logseq graph in sync across all my devices”
Solution: Set up Syncthing - and here is how they did it:

Logseq Project Management
Bas Grolleman showcases how he manages Projects in Logseq. Thanks for the video Bas!
